I have wanted to write this story for decades but never had the chance to put it into words. Maybe I did not want to relive it. Maybe I already knew that once I finally told it people would understand why certain scars never completely disappear. This is the first time I am exposing this story publicly and letting people know what happened to me.
Back in 1984 my girlfriend convinced me to go back to college. We were living in New York City and she was preparing to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She pushed me to apply and I told her that if I got accepted then I would go with her. I applied and I got in.
We made plans together. Real plans. We found an apartment in Wisconsin and secured it before the school year started. In June I handed over the first month’s rent and the security deposit. Everything was set for September. We spent the entire summer together in New York City acting like two people building a future. We even bought our tickets to Wisconsin for the week before school started. Nothing seemed wrong. Nothing even hinted at what was coming.
Then one week before we were supposed to leave I got a phone call from her. She had already gone to Wisconsin early. She sounded calm and cheerful on the phone. She told me she was preparing the apartment for the two of us and getting everything ready before I arrived. I believed her completely.
A week later I arrived in Madison carrying my luggage and expecting to walk into the beginning of a new life. Instead I walked into one of the coldest moments of my life.
The locks had been changed.
I stood there confused and knocked on the door. She opened it wearing another man’s shirt and no pants. Behind her another man sat on the couch drinking beer and watching television like I was nothing more than a stranger interrupting his evening.
She handed me an envelope containing my half of the rent and security deposit. Then she calmly told me that our relationship was not going to work out. No warning. No discussion. No honesty beforehand. Just over. Replaced. Erased.
What stayed with me all these years was not only the betrayal. It was the coldness. The complete emotional detachment once she found a replacement. A woman can spend years telling you she loves you, planning a future with you, sleeping beside you, building dreams with you, then suddenly look at you like you never mattered the moment another man steps into the picture.
There was nothing I could do. One wrong move and I would have ended up in jail while they sat there playing victims. So I picked up my bags and walked away. My tuition had already been paid so I was trapped in Wisconsin whether I wanted to stay or not. I had to scramble to find my own apartment while carrying the humiliation of realizing that the person I trusted had already moved on before I even arrived.
People talk about heartbreak like it is sadness. Sometimes it is not sadness at all. Sometimes it is shock. Sometimes it is standing outside a locked door realizing your entire future was destroyed before you even knew the demolition had started.
