We Are Not in the Same Boat

I’m 58 years old, and I have my daily coffee at a local restaurant bar. I often chat with the female bartender, occasionally sharing stories about my past relationships. I could tell she was skeptical about some of the stories I shared.

One day, as I was telling the bartender how long I’ve been single, a woman in her 50s approached me. She handed me her business card and said, “You’re single? I’m single too. We single people need to stick together. We’re in the same boat.”

I took her card, and after she finished her little speech, I replied, “We are not in the same boat. We are in the same storm.”

Looking at the card, I noticed she was a branch manager at a local bank just down the street from the restaurant. Over the next few days, she began returning to the bar, bringing a laptop and pretending to work while sitting nearby. The bartenders, knowing I have very limited vision, kept an eye on her for me. They told me she frequently glanced at me with an expectant look, as if waiting for me to make a move.

After finishing her drink, the staff would let me know she left frustrated each time.

I won’t be fooled again.
